POP!046 - Tigercats - Banned at the Troxy

7" vinyl, Limited run of 300 copies, £5

Picture Disc

Tigercats haven't been around for long, but have been causing quite a lot of noise (sometimes quite litteraly) from the very beginning. With members of Esiotrot and Hexicon, they formed in 2010, supported Dum Dum girls on their second ever show, and have already released two singles on Haircut Records.

‘Banned at the Troxy’ is their first record with the fifth band member Laura Kovic, just arrived from Australia to play Casio VLtone and share vocal duties with songwriter Duncan Barrett, and find the band at their best ever form!

POP!045 - Let's Whisper - The Shortest Days

CD, Limited run of 500 copies, £10

The Shortest Days is the first full-length album for Let's Whisper and also for WeePOP! , but far from being the first time the band and label worked together. They were on our first pop-up compilation, released two EPs and came over to the UK to play shows several times.

Long time followers, will have seen Let's Whisper going from an acoustic duo to a 4 piece band, then a 5 piece to an acoustic duo all over again. Even though its core has always been Dana and Colin's heartfelt songwriting, they are always open to opportunities to let their songs find new ways to be heard and willing to take chances with fresh sounds.

The Shortest Days certainly reflects all that, finding the band in its best form, with more robust, fuller songs, but still incredibly personal and fragile at times.

POP!043 - Lê Almeida - Mono Maçã

3" cdr, Limited run of 160 copies, £3

Lê Almeida makes short, punchy, fuzzy pop songs, filled with dirty guitar riffs and the kind of melodies that stick to your head for days. With a handful of singles and EPs released in the past four years, he is not afraid doing things in his own way – he records his own songs, sings in Portuguese, and still uses tape. The result is something pretty fantastic.

Both such quintessentially WeePOP! bands, The just joans and The Smittens represent two different sides of the atlantic and two aspects of the indiepop sound: The Smittens with their more uptempo handclaps, jangles and percussion, and the Just Joans showcasing a more uniquely british anarok styling and lineage.
